Winter Skin Care: Tips to Keep Skin Hydrated

winter skin care tips

When winter hits, your skin can lose massive hydration. Follow these tips to keep your skin hydrated and healthy.

Pampering and taking care of your skin is important all year round. But when the cold season creeps up, it becomes more vital to make sure your skin isn’t parched.

Since our skin is the barrier that keeps water inside of your body, when the winter season blasts on through,  water naturally begins to evaporate off of the skin’s surface at a much quicker rate. That’s why your skin care regimen needs change in order to combat the season’s harsh winds and temps.

One of the top concerns when it comes to winter skin care health is dry, flakey skin. There are creams, serums and treatment masks that will help you along the way, but some top dermatologists also recommend a few lifestyle changes that will help lock in that much-needed moisture.

Winter Skin Care tips:

Drink More Water

The daily recommended amount of water we’re supposed to drink is said to be eight cups per day. But since we lose moisture in the cooler months at a higher rate, doctors recommend drinking at least two more cups to make up for the rapid moisture loss. Drinking two litres is ideal.

Protect Lips

As hard as it may be, doctors say not to lick your lips, especially in winter. Regular lip chap won’t always do the trick. Make sure your lips are sealed with an effective ointment-based lip treatment at all times, especially before eating and drinking.

Change your Body Moisturizer

Since your skin needs more moisture it’s recommended that you use a body moisturizer that is thicker than one you may have been using in the summer time.

Oil Up Before bathing.

Before bathing, some doctors suggest to oil-up your skin before you get in the tub or take a hot shower. Oils like coconut oil can hydrate your skin and protect your barrier before you take a shower or get into a hot bath.  Other oils that work, Argan oil, and rose hip oil for the face.

Humidify your Home

Many dermatologists recommend using a humidifier.  Humidifiers are a great way to add moisture back into your home, especially if your skin is prone to drying with the blasting heat from your home or car.

Helping Hands

Don’t forget your hands! Hands are one of the body parts that get chapped the most since there more frequently exposed to the elements and to hand washing. Doctors say the skin on your hands is much thinner produce less oils, making them prone to dryness, and flakes.

Vitamin C

If your skin feels tired and it shows the fallout from the weather or a cold, treatment with Vitamin C gives it the luster back and magically removes signs of tired winter skin. Also, by taking a Vitamin C supplement, you can ensure your immune system gets a boost so it doesn’t wreak havoc on your body and skin.
