Upon the 50th anniversary of the notorious murder of Sharon Tate and her friends, at the hands of Charles Manson and his followers in 1969, Hilary Duff takes on her first serious role in The Haunting of Sharon Tate.
Hilary Duff is taking on a dark role for the first time in her career starring in the crime drama The Haunting of Sharon Tate movie. The former Disney star is taking on the role of Sharon Tate and her brutal murder at the hands of Charles Manson and his cult followers..
Duff, who currently plays a main character in the comedy-drama Younger, is taking a dramatic risk with the role in what will follow the events that led up to Tate’s murder. The independent movie is titled The Haunting of Sharon Tate.
Tate, an actress on the rise, who was married to director Roman Polanski at the time, was killed by the Manson and his cult members in 1969. The Haunting of Sharon Tate will explore the final days leading up to her murder. It’s said to be inspired by an interview given a year before her death where she described dreams about guests haunting her home, and foreseeing her own death at the hands of a satanic cult.
The film is written and directed by Daniel Farrands, who has previously produced The Haunting in Connecticut.
Tate, 26 at the time of her death was eight-and-a-half months pregnant with their first child — a boy — when she was brutally murdered. Tate’s unborn son was also murdered. The actress was due to give birth within two weeks of her death. It’s been documented that she pleaded with her killers yelling, “Please don’t kill me. I just want to have my baby” before being stabbed 16 times. The killers used her blood to write “PIG” on the outside door of her house in the Hollywood Hills.
Duff recently posted a photo of herself on Instagram dressed as the actress, in complete Sharon Tate makeup.
“Had the incredible opportunity of playing Sharon Tate the past two weeks in an independent movie. She was an amazing woman and it was a true honour,” Duff wrote in the caption.
Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski and Steven Parent were also stabbed at the home of the actress, whose blood was used to write on the walls.
Manson died in November at the age of 83. He was serving nine life sentences in California’s Corcoran State Prison at the time of his death.
Tate’s sister, Debra, has voiced concerns over the movie and is against Duff in the role. Debra says she owns the rights to her sister’s likeness and says it’s based on falsehoods. “It would have been nice if someone had contacted me,” she says told People.
This is one of three upcoming film projects about the Manson murders, which will mark it’s 50th anniversary of the deaths next year. The other films in the works are Quentin Tarantino’s untitled (tentatively titled 1969) and Mary Harron’s Charlie Says.
The Haunting of Sharon Tate is produced by Skyline Entertainment. No released date confirmed.
